SAFAL – Structured assessment for analyzing learning

  • To map progress throughout school years, the NEP 2020 proposes an annual school assessment for all students in Grades 3, 5, and 8. This assessment will focus on testing core concepts, application of knowledge, and higher-order thinking skills.

  • SAFAL will ensure progress throughout school years by providing diagnostic information about students’ learning to schools, thus supporting school education to move towards competency-based education.

  • The results of this assessment will largely be used to provide development feedback to schools and not for the promotion of students to the next grade.

KEY FEATURES OF ASSESSMENT

Formulated in the footsteps of NEP 2020, SAFAL will strengthen the assessment system to promote critical thinking, inquiry-based, and analysis-based learning. SAFAL is a stepping stone to enabling competency-based education in all schools.
Test core concepts and move away from rote learning.
Assessments are applicable for all Government and Private Schools.
School-level data will be shared for the development of learning outcomes.
Data to be used for continuous handholding and improvement.
National Education Policy recommends assessment of core concepts along with high-order thinking skills and application of knowledge in real-life situations, thereby moving away from rote memorization.

It is one of the major assessment tools for school education that aims to revolutionize assessment beyond the present-day rote learning assessment yardsticks in the form of a 2 hours yearend written examination. Mam started with a small introduction to NEP. And then she moved with live practicals to how to open the CBSC site and how to go into SAFAL. She then gave an introduction about SAFAL. Safal is a competency-based assessment for Classes 3, 5, and 8, initially implemented through CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education). In short, all Class 3, 5, and 8 students will take school examinations which will examine the foundational learning outcomes, through analysis of core concepts and competencies among students. Safal as a diagnostic assessment caters to developmental feedback to schools, parents, and teachers. Currently, CBSE, ICSE, and state boards conduct assessments only for Class 10 and 12 Students. NEP-2020 has made clear postulates to improve the quality of assessment at all levels of school education. It recommends transforming the assessment system for improving the learning levels needed for the 21st century. Assessment of pupils' learning outcomes is vital to improving the quality of education. It is the process of collecting and assessing information on what learners know, what they understood, what they can do, how they can act in real-life situations etc. The new assessment method would be focused on the core competencies like literacy, numeracy, and language skills along with relevant HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) and the application of acquired knowledge in contemporary real-life situations rather than rote memorization. For Class 3, the assessment includes basic literacy, numeracy, and other foundational skills, reading, speaking, writing, comprehension, etc. She then said to go through all handbooks CBSC sites have provided and also go through the papers and then make it.
